Twelve-year old Lia Park just wants to fit in. Her parents work with a mysterious organization that makes them ridiculously overprotective. Lia's every move has been scrutinized since she was born, and she'd love to have the option of doing something exciting for once. So when she gets invited to the biggest birthday party of the year—and her parents say she can't go—Lia sneaks out.
But her first act of rebellion not only breaks her parents' rules, but also an ancient protection spell, allowing an evil diviner spirit to kidnap and ransom her parents for a powerful jewel that her family has guarded for years. With just the clothes on her back and some very rusty magical skills, Lia finds herself chasing mysterious clues that take her to her grandmother's home in Korea.
From there, she has to make their way to the undersea kingdom of the Dragon King, the only person who knows where the powerful jewel might be. Along with her friend, Joon, Lia must dig deep and find courage to stand up for those who are weak—and become the hero her parents need.

Gr 3-7-Debut novelist Yoon absolutely deserved better than having her text disrespected by irresponsible producers who somehow still believe that being of a certain heritage must guarantee language fluency. Narrator Joy Osmanski, an ethnic Korean adopted at seven months to a white family, clearly doesn't speak Korean, immediately obvious in the dedication when "Saranghae" sounds like "sarang-ghay"; her repeated mispronunciation of "Halmoni" (grandmother)-173 instances, according to a quick word search-is especially trying. While Osmanski undoubtedly captures 12-year-old Korean American Lia's vibrant determination to save her kidnapped parents from an ancient malevolent spirit, that she stumbles so often on the Korean words and phrases liberally sprinkled throughout makes listening unnecessarily challenging. After a childhood of reading books without heroes who looked like her, "Lia Park is the hero I hungered for," Yoon appends in her written acknowledgments. VERDICT Choosy hero seekers will prefer the page.-Terry Hong

With quick pacing that never slows, polished narrator Joy Osmanski portrays 12-year-old Korean-American Lia Park in this action-packed adventure filled with magic and mystery. As Lia and her best friend, Joon, prepare for their IMA (International Magic Agency) exam, Lia's parents are kidnapped by an ancient and vengeful sorceress named Gaya. This development sends Lia and Joon on a quest for a powerful jewel that can turn back time. Osmanski's performance gives distinctive voices to others and always keeps Lia's voice filled with wonder as she and listeners learn on the go. Korean history, culture, food, and words are sprinkled throughout. Listeners will enjoy this fascinating story about family and self-discovery. There's even a surprise at the end.
